Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computerized systems for the storage, retrieval, manipulation, analysis, and display of geographically referenced data (Mark et al., 1996). The components of a GIS project fall into three
categories; computer hardware and software, spatial data, and trained personnel. A GIS can also be considered a visual language that allows the user to visualize and easily interact with digital data. This paper will discuss the basics behind
defining and assembling a planetary GIS project
